The town of Lincoln, Massachusetts
was first settled in 1650 and was incorporated in 1754. Having just celebrated
its 250th anniversary, it was named after the English city rather than
the American president.
Lincoln is the home of Hanscom Field, which played a vital role in the
development of radar. Today, Hanscom Air Force Base comprises more than
a third of the town’s population. It continues to be the site of
collaboration between the military and the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology to develop the next generation of weapons of war.
Lincoln is home to a number of cultural treasures. Walter Gropius, founder
of the Bauhaus design movement designed and built a home here when he came
to teach at Harvard. The Gropius house is now a National Historic Landmark,
and is open year round on selected days of the week. The De Cordova Museum
and Sculpture Park contains a wealth of regional and contemporary art.
It also has a strong educational mission, offering classes at all levels
to some 4000 students every year.
